Being only an hour or so ferry from Lavrio, Kythnos is a popular island for Athenians. Despite being a small island it has over 90 beaches. It’s a very quiet, peaceful island and there are only a handful of villages to visit and restaurants worth eating at. Here are some of my favourites below. A few notes:
📝 A couple of good bakeries; Ο Σταμάτης and Vlastaris
📝Unlike a lot of other islands you neither receive a shot of raki nor a free desert with your meal.
📝 In terms of where to stay I was at Saint Nicholas Resort. It was a beautiful and spacious apartment with great views of the sea.
1. Το Στέκι του Ντέτζη
📍Chora. A beautiful restaurant in the heart of Kythnos Chora serving fall-apart chicken & pork kontosouvli (souvla in Cyprus). This spot was highly recommended to me by a few people and it definitely delivered. We also got a fried feta in filo with honey, Greek salad and fava.
2. Arias
📍Agia Irine. You can’t hit the Greek islands without getting at least one lobster linguine. Mediterranean shoe-slipper lobster are expensive and a little on the small side, but they taste so good. Arias is known for serving the best seafood on Kythnos. The selection of freshly caught fish was great. As well as lobster they had grouper, sea bass, scorpion fish (the red ones in slide four), mullet, shrimp and said. The original owner was Captain Konstantis Vlastaris, the local lighthouse keeper, and now it’s run by his grandchildren. The sauce with the pasta had a delicious rich lobster bisque flavour. The prices are pretty high but you won’t be disappointed.
3. Κούτσικος – Εστιατόριο
📍Κούτσικος Εστιατόριο (Koutsikos Restaurant) is a road-side restaurant on the way into Loutra. They serve grilled meat and Greek classics. We went for the almyra (monk’s beard in English), lamb chops, zucchini fritters, chickpeas and fried feta in honey. Everything was good expect the fried feta which had slightly too thick a pastry which had gone a little spongey. I really wanted the slow-cooked goat in tomato sauce or lemon sauce but they had run-out (maybe this is more of a lunch spot.
4. Archipelagos Restaurant
📍Kanala Kythnou. You’ll find this restaurant nestled between Great Sands and Paralia Antonides beaches. They opened later than what the times said on Google but that’s pretty common for Greece. We went for the lamb chops and potatoes, sardines, Greek salad, tzatziki & fries. The food was solid but it felt a little expensive.
