How To Eat Well in Seville

Maybe the most beautiful city in Spain with the largest historic centre in Europe. It’s also known to get more sun than any other city in the country. Seville’s motto is “No me ha dejado” (“It has not forsaken me”) commenting on the captivating effect the city has on its visitors. Most importantly, Seville one of the best cities for tapas in Spain. The amount of bars worth visiting for different specialty dishes is endless, but here’s a few of my favourites.

1. El Rinconcillo

The oldest tapas bar in Seville (and my favourite), serving traditional Sevillano dishes since 1670. You can have sit-down meals in the upstairs dining room, or tapas downstairs. Try the Arroz Chacinero, Arroz Negro, Salmorejo & Carrillada (pork cheeks).

2. Casa Morales

Another absolute gem of a tapas bar that’s barely changed since it opened in 1850. The backroom is lined with huge concrete vats that have been there since Morales was a winery. They have a great cheese and cured meat selection here.

3. Espacio Eslava

My favourite modern tapas bar in the city. Everything is good but the must-get dishes for me is the egg yolk on boletus cake, ‘cigar’ stuffed with squid ink cream & honey ribs. You can book ahead for the tables inside at the back or walk-in for the bar and outside.

4. Bar Alfalfa

Another classic tapas bar open from 09:00 so great spot to kick off your tapas tour. They do a great Iberico jamon, tomato & olive oil sandwich. So simple but so good.

5. Bar Las Teresas 1870

A beautiful traditional tapas bar in the Jewish Quarter that’s been here 1870. Iberico jamon hanging from the ceiling throughout.

6. La Brunilda

You’ll find this modern tapas bar high on almost every best tapas bar list for Seville. The confit duck, steak & patatas bravas were all winners for me. I didn’t really understand what other dishes like noodles were doing on the menu. Book ahead or be disappointed.

7. Bodea Santa Cruz La Columnas

Named after the stone columns out front. Expect quick service and all the Sevillano classics. Make sure you get the five-cheese spinach & montadito pringa (a spicy stewed pork sandwich).

8. El Comercio

A great spot for coffee & breakfast churros.

9. La Fresquita

Another old-school tapas bar with waiters in black-and-white uniforms, walls plastered with pictures of the Virgin Mary and a dark, beamed ceiling. Jostle up to the bar or lean on the wall-mounted shelves outside to sip cañas, nibble on tapas and people watch.

10. Bodeguita Romero

Bodeguita Romero is known for serving Seville’s best montaditos de pringa: small sandwiches filled with stewed pork, chorizo and blood sausage, which are among the city’s most iconic tapas.

11. Bodeguita Antonio Romero Origen

Another tapas bar known for their miniature sandwiches. Here you want to get the pripri which is a basically bacon, tomato & garlic mayo in a hot crusty white roll.

12. Dos de Mayo

Known as one of the best spots in Seville for seafood tapas.
